NHL: Maple Leafs’ Reaves suspended 5 games for hit on Oilers’ Nurse

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves was suspended five games for sending an illegal check to the head of Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse.

Reaves was also fined $35,156.25, the National Hockey League’s Department of Safety announced Sunday.

The incident occurred at 2:38 in the second period of the Maple Leafs’ 4-3 overtime win in Toronto on Saturday.

Nurse was holding the puck near the end boards in his zone when Reaves came up and shot it in the air.

The nurse’s helmet was almost off and there was blood on her face. The 29-year-old appeared dazed as he tried to stand up and received immediate medical attention before leaving the game.

Reaves was given a match penalty for the hit.

The Oilers announced Sunday afternoon that they have recalled defenseman Josh Brown from their American Hockey League affiliate.
