MANILA, Philippines — Even as Typhoon Pepito (international name: Man-yi) leaves the province’s weather Philippine area of ​​responsibility (PAR), some Luzon areas remain at “moderate” to “high” risk of storm surge in the next 48 hours. The bureau warned early Monday morning.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) defines storm surge as “an abnormal rise in sea level that occurs during tropical cyclones or typhoons.”

“It is caused by the strong winds and low atmospheric pressure produced by tropical cyclones. As a tropical cyclone approaches the coast, strong winds push ocean water towards low-lying coastal areas, which can lead to flooding.” said Pagasa.

Below is a list of areas that may experience storm surge in the next 48 hours:

2.1 to 3 meters

• Ilocos Sur
• La Union
• pangasinan

1 to 2 meters

• Ilocos Sur

• pangasinan
• Zambales

In these areas, people are advised to stay away from the coast or beach, cancel all sailing activities, and move to higher ground away from the coast and storm surge-prone areas.

Pagasa said in its 2 a.m. hurricane update that Pepito is now 105 kilometers west southwest of Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

It is moving northwestward at 30 kilometers per hour (km/h), with maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h near the center and gusts up to 185 km/h.

Pepito is expected to leave the country’s border on Monday morning or at noon.
