I’m a celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! It kicks off tonight (November 17) with Ant and Dec returning for the 24th series of the gritty reality show.

But the forest that will host the 2024 series’ campmates has seen its share of tragedies.

The show is filmed in Springbrook National Park on Australia’s Gold Coast forest, which attracts thousands of tourists every year.

Unfortunately, with such a high volume of visitors, accidents are inevitable and the dangerous landscape has seen hikers fall to their deaths from high ledges and waterfalls.

Ahead of the new series, Express.co.uk looked at the spooky stories surrounding the Australian bush.

‘Murder-suicide’

In a harrowing case of “murder-suicide”, young mother Benita Forster and her baby Tana Taui were found dead in shallow water at the bottom of a 33-meter waterfall in the park in 2002.

Police initially ruled the incident a murder-suicide after finding a note in the woman’s car that said “goodbye.”

But the investigation was anything but simple; officers stated that Benita’s belongings and the items in her bag were deliberately scattered on the road leading to the waterfall.

The investigation was reopened after Benita’s family, convinced by her strong “anti-suicide” stance, said she would never harm her child.

Friends suggested that the young mother may have become the target of murder, especially after her relationship with John Nevin.

Nevin was the leader of the notorious Black Uhlans biker gang and was involved with Forster until his death in a motorcycle accident.

He was later associated with notorious drug lord Fred Taui. The incident was also linked by investigators to the infamous Perish brothers, but the incident remains a mystery.

Benita’s stepson, Wade Yates-Taui, was later convicted of unlawful murder after being involved in a bikie gang.

Grandfather’s chilling death

In 2022, a 79-year-old grandfather tragically fell 25 meters down the waterfall while hiking with his daughters.

While hiking the 4km Twin Falls trail around the national park, they reached a narrow section of the trail. The man then slipped and rolled down an embankment.

While a rescue helicopter was quickly dispatched to the area to save the man’s life, one of the man’s daughters also went down the embankment to save him.

Unfortunately, the person whose name was not disclosed was seriously injured and died. Her daughter was rescued by helicopter.

In another tragic incident in 2009, a man died after falling 60 meters while walking with his friends at night.

They had no torches, making the dangerous road ahead invisible. This has prompted the Department of Environment and Resource Management to urgently remind bushwalkers that they must carry appropriate equipment.

Tragically, the 34-year-old man’s cries for help echoed below, but despite his appeals, rescuers only found him six hours later, by which time he had passed away.

“It appears the men went on a night walk to look at the valley,” a spokesman said at the time. “They were not holding torches when the man fell.”

fear of flood

In 2017, residents of Springbrook were left terrified when a section of the road was submerged in severe flooding accompanied by horrific landslides and 900mm of rainfall.

Citizens were left without electricity and stranded because the roads were closed due to landslides, and some were swept away by flood waters.

Fortunately, emergency services managed to reach the site within 36 hours and locals admitted they were “panicked”.

Local resident Shannen Hillman said at the time: “We were in a bit of a panic at one point because we didn’t think it would take this long; we thought we might be disconnected overnight.”

“The entire community of Springbrook is so grateful to the workers, fire crew and SES for being so helpful and helpful in building the bridge in such a short time.”

When a woman’s body was found at the bottom of a waterfall in 2013, police claimed there were “no suspicious circumstances” surrounding the incident.

However, it is not yet clear whether the woman in her 40s fell from a high road after her body was found by hikers.

The woman was pronounced dead when emergency crews arrived at the scene on Purlingbrook Falls Road.
