Russian forces have launched their “biggest airstrike” on Ukraine in months, targeting vital energy infrastructure as temperatures in the war-torn country plummet below zero.

Explosions were heard in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities early Sunday morning, in what Ukrainian officials described as the largest missile attack since August.

“Russia launched one of its largest air strikes: drones and missiles against peaceful cities, sleeping civilians and critical infrastructure,” said Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

Putin’s forces have launched repeated and sustained attacks on Ukraine’s power grid in an attempt to cripple essential infrastructure and cause long-term power outages.

This comes as temperatures drop below freezing in Kiev and other parts of Ukraine with the start of the winter months.

Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko wrote on Facebook: “A new major attack on the energy system is on the way. The enemy is attacking electricity generation and transmission facilities throughout Ukraine.”

The extent of damage in Ukrainian cities was not immediately clear, but electricity supplies were cut off by authorities in many urban areas to prevent further damage. Officials are generally tight-lipped about the state of the energy infrastructure due to the war.

At least two people were killed overnight.

Polish air force prevents Russian drone attacks

Poland and its allies launched an air operation in response to Russia’s large-scale missile attack on Western Ukraine.

The Polish military said “normal fighter aircraft pairs were scrambled and ground air defense and radar systems were placed on high alert,” according to a statement from the Polish armed forces. Ukrainian Pravda.

“Attention, the operation of Polish and allied aircraft in our airspace began due to the large-scale attack of the Russian Federation, which launched cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles at targets, especially in Western Ukraine. He adds to his statement.

“Operations Command is monitoring the current situation and subordinate assets and personnel remain fully prepared for immediate response.”

Foreign Minister: Ukraine suffered ‘largest air attack’

As temperatures dropped below zero in some regions, Russian forces launched one of the “largest air strikes” in months, targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

“Russia has launched one of its largest air strikes: drones and missiles against peaceful cities, sleeping civilians and critical infrastructure,” Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a statement Sunday morning.

He added that the attack was a “real reaction” to leaders interacting with Vladimir Putin, in an apparent attack on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was criticized by Kiev for his phone call with Putin on Friday.

A series of powerful explosions were heard in downtown Kiev as night temperatures in the capital dropped below freezing, attempting to inflict major damage on Russian power supplies.

Zelensky says Ukraine must ensure war ends through diplomacy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine should ensure that the war with Russia ends next year through diplomacy.

Mr. Zelensky acknowledged in a radio interview on Saturday that the situation on the eastern Ukrainian front was difficult as Russia continued to advance in key areas.

US legislation prevents the president from meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump before his inauguration in January; but Mr. Zelensky said he would speak only to Trump rather than to an adviser.

“As the President of Ukraine, I will only take it seriously, with due respect to the President of the United States and any environment and any person.”

“From our perspective, we must do everything to end this war by diplomatic means, to end it next year,” Mr. Zelensky said.

Where has Russia made progress on the front line in Ukraine?

Ukrainian forces defending the eastern region of Donetsk are heading towards a “moment of maximum tension” as Russian forces rush to seize territory across Ukraine ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration next year, war monitors have claimed.

Mr Trump’s sweeping victory in the US election, which came on the back of his promise to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, has sharply eased Kiev’s plight on the front line.

Russian forces continue to make gains in the eastern region of Donetsk, advancing on several fronts towards the city of Pokrovsk, the cornerstone of the defense of the vast region.

“I can only say we didn’t get half of it.
