Victim’s family speaks out after 3 women seriously injured in Wilmington hit-and-run

WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) — “She went through a terrible trauma,” Pamela Dupree said.

Pamela said her daughter, Jasmin Dupree, was physically and emotionally scarred after being hit by a vehicle and undergoing bladder reconstruction surgery.

“His stomach hurts really bad. So I have to be there for him and I don’t know when I’ll be back and I don’t care because he’s my baby,” said Pamela, who now lives in Pittsburgh, PA.

“I was heartbroken to see my sister in the hospital bed,” said Joi Dupree, Jasmin’s sister. “He devastated me. I broke down and cried because I had never seen him in so much pain.”

Wilmington Police said Jasmin, 35, and two other women, ages 33 and 36, were struck by a vehicle in the 1600 block of Delaware Avenue around 2 a.m. Saturday morning. All three of them were hospitalized in critical condition. Police said the driver left the scene. Pamela said Jasmin lived nearby and was just hanging out with friends at the time of the accident.

“The driver came out of nowhere and smashed them like they were bowling pins. It was incredible,” Pamela said.

“He didn’t deserve this, so I really hope they catch those responsible for this,” Joi said. “This is ridiculous. How do you do this to someone and keep them going?”

Family members said the 36-year-old victim was a long-time friend of Jasmin. They said he had several broken bones and his brain was swollen.

“He’s just unresponsive,” Pamela said. “Her family is there right now. They came and visited Jasmin, and we stood there and cried and hugged each other because we’re grateful they’re alive.”

“She has a good heart and it’s devastating for this to happen to her,” Joi said.

Eric Hoover, who lives across the street, said he heard the blow and was shocked by the outcome.

“This is truly terrible and this is not uncommon here,” Hoover said.

“It’s kind of hard to believe,” said Chaz Crews of Wilmington. “This is a beautiful area, I really don’t hear much about what’s going on here.”

As the detectives continue to search for the suspect, Pamela receives this message: “You can run but you can’t hide and you will be found because you reap what you sow. One way or another, someone will catch you.” “I’m going to turn you in,” Pamela said. “When they hear this story of how these victims were affected and nearly lost their lives, someone will have courage and compassion and expose who these people are.”
