ESPN commentator Greg McElroy let the Pitt Panthers take the pick after the disastrous goal-line sequence that cost the team dearly in their game against the Clemson Tigers.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Panthers were trailing by 10 points as they moved into third-and-goal position. What followed was a disaster: two false starts, a delay of game, and an errant timeout pushed Pitt back to the Clemson 16, and the series ended with an incomplete pass on third down.

McElroy, who was a commentator for ESPN, left the job to Pitt after the disaster.

“I can’t quite get over how bad the last two minutes were for the Pitt Panthers,” McElroy said. “As far as goal-line execution goes, it can’t get any worse than what I’ve seen in the last few games. That’s incredible. Unforgivable. This cannot happen.

“There’s really no excuse for what just happened. You almost delayed the game in the second game. You have to burn a timeout. Then you come out of the timeout, you’re faced with an illegal formation. Then you get a false start. It’s just how bad that operation was.” “I can’t explain.”

Pitt then capitalized on the next point and brought the score to 17-10, and they eventually took the lead 20-17. But Clemson escaped with a late touchdown to win 24-20. That meant the goal line bench was even bigger: If Pitt had been able to put the ball in play from the 1, if the rest of the game had been played the same way, those extra four points could have allowed the Panthers to go into overtime.
