Phone scams are targeted McHenry County Authorities warn that residents are using fake threats and impersonating sheriff’s office employees.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office warned residents about the scam on social media Friday.

Scammers are using the names of real employees at the sheriff’s office and demanding immediate callbacks from victims, deputies say.

Before trying to obtain personal information, scammers may claim there is a warrant for the victim’s arrest or that they missed a grand jury summons, authorities said.

“As a reminder, no police department will contact you by phone claiming to have a search warrant or requesting payment,” the sheriff’s office said. “If you receive a call like this, hang up.”

Area residents are also encouraged by the sheriff’s office to warn their elderly friends and family members about the scam.
