Hong Kong police have arrested a garbage truck driver after his vehicle crashed into a 93-year-old woman who later died.

Police said the woman was struck and crushed while the driver’s vehicle was reversing towards a school at 3 Harmony Road in Siu Sai Wan at around 1.27pm on Saturday.

“At around 1.27pm, it was reported that a special purpose vehicle driven by a 66-year-old man hit a 93-year-old woman who was passing by while she was returning to a school at 3 Harmony Road,” police said.

Police said the woman suffered multiple serious injuries and was pronounced dead at 2.25pm.

Authorities said the driver, surnamed Ho, was arrested for dangerous driving causing death and is currently being held for questioning.

The force’s special investigation team responsible for traffic on Hong Kong Island is currently investigating the incident, while police have appealed for witnesses and anyone with information to call 3660 6814.
