David Artell escaped ‘horrible penalty call’ that did not cost Grimsby

Grimsby manager David Artell believes justice was served after goalkeeper Jordan Wright saved a second-half penalty in their 0-0 draw with Newport in League Two.

Artell was unhappy with the performance of referee James Oldham, who ruled that Kieran Green had brought down County striker Kyle Hudlin in the penalty area just before the hour mark.

But Wright came to the rescue with a superb save, diving to the left to deny Hudlin’s spot-kick.

The Grimsby boss admitted the hosts could have been awarded a fifth-minute penalty for a foul on Kieran Evans but it was not awarded, and he also felt angered that his side had a goal disallowed for offside and that Exiles winger Bobby Kamwa should have seen red . For a foul on Tyrell Warren.

“The penalty decision was terrible,” Artell said. “Both teams agreed it wasn’t a penalty.

“Referees make mistakes and this was 100 per cent a mistake. It was a clean tackle, a great tackle.

“I don’t think the referee played his best game. They could have had a penalty early and should have been red carded in the first half; Kamwa almost broke Ty’s leg. “We conceded a goal that wasn’t offside.

“The referee made some bad decisions but so did my players and Newport’s players.”

Grimsby had won five consecutive League Two games away from home before this match, but Artell was delighted with a point that kept his side in seventh place.

“I thought both teams could win and both could lose,” he added.

“It was a competitive match. On the one hand, I am happy with the win and our continuing unbeaten streak away from home.

“On the other hand, did we do enough to win? Maybe on another day. We had some very good chances, but they happened too. So maybe one point is a fair result.”

County head coach Nelson Jardim felt his side deserved the win.

The Portuguese coach said, “We were the better team in every aspect, even if we did not score, we created scoring chances and saved the penalty in the second match we played at home.”

“We played one-third of the league matches and have 20 points. We have 30 games ahead of us, how quickly can we get 10 more wins?

“This is one point and we will focus on our performances because the results will not always go in your favor.

“There was a bitter taste in the end. But I need to focus on the overall performance and we were fine. “If we keep doing the same thing, then we’ll be fine.”
