Why was the Innova container accident at Dehradun’s ONGC Chowk not caught on CCTV cameras? Officials explain – The Week

Various theories have gone viral on the internet regarding the circumstances that led to the horrific accident of Innova container truck at Dehradun’s ONGC Chowk in the early hours of Tuesday. The accident, in which six students traveling in İnnova lost their lives, took the internet by storm when a striking video taken from the blood-soaked accident scene went viral.

Dehradun Police has stated that many allegations circulating on the internet are false. While police confirmed that the friends had previously met at the home of Siddhesh Agarwal, the sole survivor of the crash, they could not establish whether alcohol was served at his home.

Another theory claimed that the Innova crashed into the truck while colliding with a BMW car in the race. Some claimed that after the luxury car overtook the Innova, the youths embarked on a high-speed chase, which ultimately led to the accident. According to Dehradun Police, there is no evidence to substantiate this claim. They also released CCTV footage showing the ill-fated Innova car at around 1.16am, less than half an hour before the crash. The images were shot from areas such as Rajput Road, Ballupur and Sahranpur Chowk.

The Innova was not speeding beyond the permissible limit in any of these videos. Police confirmed the vehicle had reached dangerous speed limits shortly before the crash.

So then why wasn’t the accident or the vehicles involved in the accident caught on camera at ONGC Chowk a few minutes before the collision? Did the victims meet their unfortunate fate in the area’s blind spot? NO.

The last minutes of the speeding Innova before it crashed into the truck were not recorded because the CCTV cameras at the ad around ONGC Chowk went offline.

According to Dehradun Smart City Limited (DSCL), 134 of the 536 road cameras in the city are still not working. A report by Times Of India (TOI) stated that among those reported to be dysfunctional was the one near the accident site. Daily added that the cameras were taken offline following a ransomware attack.
