Murder suspect with dead ankle monitor allegedly committed second murder while in custody

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA/Gray News) – A man from Alabama released on bail for murder He is accused of committing another murder.

Investigators in Mobile say Nyyon Sanders shot Joseph Evans Jr. at the scene Dauphin Gate apartments Monday night.

Nyyon Sanders allegedly allowed the battery in his ankle monitor to die before committing the second crime.

Now the private electronic ankle monitoring company is under fire again.

District Court President Judge Wesley Pipes identified the company as Accupoint and said there had been problems in the past.

District Attorney Keith Blackwood says he is very concerned about how this crime was committed.

“This is an absolute worst-case scenario that everyone in the community fears,” Blackwood said.

Nyyon Sanders was arrested Wednesday morning following a search warrant in the area of Bankhead Avenue and Euclid Avenue.

The victim’s family says they were outraged after learning he was already in custody for murder.

“How many times does it take for a person to kill someone? Just like the second time, how many chances will they have?” “This will be the third time someone’s family has gone through what I and the first family went through, so I hope justice will be served,” Joseph Evans Sr. said.

According to Blackwood, Nyyon Sanders should not have been in that district in the first place.

“My understanding is that Nyyon Sanders allowed her ankle monitor to go off after 5 p.m. and committed the murder within four hours,” Blackwood said.

Last month Accupoint was under fire after a murder suspect violated the conditions He went to a casino in Mississippi and secured his release.

Piping says it’s “definitely an option” will be cutting ties with Accupoint in the near future.

Pipes also said he contacted the company Wednesday afternoon. His office is trying to understand what’s coming from multiple agencies and is exploring various options for the best way to electronically monitor suspects while they’re out on bail.

According to Mobile police, Nyyon Sanders was in jail for a time without bail. 2022 murder She is allegedly with her brother Kevin Sanders.

Court documents state that bail for both brothers was revoked. The documents also state that the brothers were together during both alleged crimes.

Kevin Sanders is not charged with the November murder, according to court documents, but Nyyon violated his bond after allegedly traveling with Sanders to an area outside of his authorized travel.

Blackwood described this as a failure of the specialized ankle monitoring system.

He said the company wouldn’t be alerted that Nyyon Sanders’ battery was dead until 8 a.m. the next morning.

“Again, it’s another situation where there’s a private ankle monitoring company tasked with monitoring someone who is out on bail,” Blackwood said. “That did not happen in this case and this defendant is alleged to have committed another murder.”

The district attorney says he’s ready for the sheriff’s office to take over, but it’s all about money.

“It all depends on the funding our law enforcement needs to be able to undertake this mission,” Blackwood said. “You have to be staffed to do this. You have to be equipped. The sheriff’s office is once again ready, willing and able to take on this mission.”

Accupoint did not respond to requests for comment.

The trial for the 2022 murder is scheduled to begin on January 13, 2025.
