Man arrested for arson as crews battle brush fires in West Oahu

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Honolulu police arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly starting a brush fire in West Oahu.

It was learned that the suspect was arrested for second degree arson.

Firefighters were called to the Maili Pill Box area shortly after noon. While the teams evacuated the hikers in the area, they prevented others from entering the path.

Fire officials have yet to confirm the extent of the fire, but burnt bushes could be seen on the mountainside.

The right westbound lane of Farrington Highway was closed to emergency vehicles in the area.

There were no evacuation orders for homes or nearby communities.

Crews had extinguished another fire just up the road earlier in the day. The fire was extinguished just before 10 a.m.

The area is under a red flag warning, meaning the risk of fire is high. Conditions such as high winds, low humidity and low chance of rain can cause fires to spread quickly.

Hawaii News Now announced Friday First Alert Weather Day.

The Honolulu Fire Department evacuated hikers in the area and prevented others from entering the trail.
