Downey says 605 Freeway will close in parts of Norwalk over the weekend: Here’s where

Caltrans to issue fourth 55-hour extension weekend lane closure operation for road improvement work on the southbound San Gabriel River (605) freeway. Downey And Norwalk Areas starting Friday evening and extending into Monday morning.

According to Caltrans, the closures will occur at various times along the southbound 605 Freeway between the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Downey and Firestone Boulevard in Norwalk.

There will be a complete closure of the southbound 605 Freeway Friday night and Sunday night. There will be only lane reductions for the remainder of the weekend.

The schedule of closures, which may change, is as follows:

Southbound on the 605 Freeway from the 5 Freeway to Firestone Boulevard:

  • All southbound lanes will be closed from 22:00 Friday until 04:01 Saturday for k-rail and temporary striping.
  • The two southbound lanes will be open to traffic from 4:01 a.m. Saturday until 11 p.m. Sunday.
  • All southbound lanes will be closed again from 11pm on Sunday until 5:01am on Monday to remove the k-rail and re-stripe the highway.
  • All southbound lanes will reopen to the public at 5:01 a.m. Monday.
  • Various motorway connections and ramps will also be affected as follows:
  • The northbound and southbound 5 Freeway connectors to the southbound 605 Freeway will be closed from 8 pm Friday until 5:01 am Monday.
  • Florence Boulevard and Telegraph Road ramps to the southbound 605 Freeway will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday until 6:01 a.m. Monday.

During the hours when the highway is completely closed, traffic will be diverted from local main roads.

This affected section of the 605 Freeway carries an average of more than 250,000 vehicles per day, Caltrans reported.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area during construction periods and use alternate highways whenever possible, including the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway, Long Beach (710) Freeway and State Route 57.

Fourteen additional extended weekend closures are planned at various times, extending through 2025, in conjunction with this portion of the “Super 605 Freeway Corridor Improvement Project.” Dates for these closures are not yet available.

This work is part of the Super 605 Freeway Corridor projects that will rehabilitate the 605 Freeway from Long Beach to the San Gabriel Valley. The total construction cost of $260 million was funded by $238 million from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and more than $20.5 million from Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
