Officials along the Oregon coast are sending out a warning about very dangerous high tides, often called major tides, this weekend.

“Please monitor these high tides from a distance. Look for locations well above the action and away from cliff edges,” the Cannon Beach Police Department wrote. “Don’t let the parking lot fool you. Just because it looks relatively safe doesn’t mean nearby trails and beaches are safe. Avoid being on the beach during a storm or high tide. Piers to watch.” It is not a safe place.”

King Tide is a popular, unscientific term that people often use to describe exceptionally high tides, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Higher-than-normal tides are often new moon or full moon and when the moon is at this point perigeeor throughout the country during certain seasons.
