Central Texas crime group uses more than 50 stolen identities to defraud loan company of over $200K

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – A Central Texas criminal group allegedly used more than 50 stolen identities to obtain more than $200,000 in fraudulent loans from a loan company, an affidavit alleges.

Thalemus Ramone Conway, 48, Trisha Ann McCoy, 35, Danny Scott Johnson, 41, and Caleb Scott Johnson, 22, are accused of participating in organized criminal activity.

In September 2024, state officials met with the Chief Security Officer of Selected Management Resources, who oversees security operations for Lonestar Loans, and were informed that a group of people were targeting the Lonestar Title Loans location in Waco, an affidavit states.

According to testimony, the group was using compromised or stolen personal identities and presenting the information to Conway, who was then an employee of Lonestar Title Company and was allegedly part of the criminal group.

An initial investigation led authorities to believe Caleb Johnson, Danny Johnson and McCoy obtained 20 fraudulent title loans totaling $28,000 using 19 stolen identities, an affidavit alleged.

When reviewing video footage dated June 24, 2024, the affidavit states Caleb Johnson could be seen talking to Conway and using a fake ID to obtain a $550 title loan.

Authorities believe Caleb Johnson received 1/3 of the fraudulent loan he helped obtain, according to the affidavit.

Video footage reveals a similar incident occurred on July 8, 2024, when McCoy used a stolen identity to obtain a fraudulent $650 loan from Conway, an affidavit states.

During an interview with McCoy, he allegedly told authorities in an affidavit that he obtained five vehicle title loans and that everyone involved in the scheme received 1/3 of the value of the fake loans they helped obtain.

Further review of the evidence led authorities to identify Danny Johnson as the mastermind behind the criminal operation, the affidavit alleges.

Danny Johnson would provide the runners with vehicle names and stolen identities and coordinate with Conway so he could make fraudulent loans, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit alleges that Danny Johnson would contact and transport McCoy, Caleb Johnson and other runners who have not yet been identified.

Authorities also believe Danny Johnson received 1/3 of the total amount of the loans, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit, filed on October 17, 2024, states that authorities received additional information from the Chief Security Officer that Lonestar Title Loans conducted further investigation into fraudulent title loans associated with the group, resulting in a total of 116 fraudulent title loans of total value. $219,754.78.

In addition, the affidavit stated that the number of stolen identities used in the criminal operation was over 50.

Conway is being held in the McLennan County Jail on a $75,000 bond, while McCoy is being held on a $32,500 bond.
