At least 10 people died in a fire at a nursing home in Spain

Authorities in Zaragoza, Spain, announced that at least 10 people died in a fire that broke out in a nursing home.

MADRID – At least 10 people died in a fire at a nursing home in Zaragoza, Spain, before firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, local officials reported Friday.

Authorities were alerted to the fire early Friday morning at Villa Franca de Ebro, about 30 minutes from the northeastern city.

According to local media reports, the cause of the fire is not yet known.

Jorge Azcon, head of the regional government of Aragon, whose capital is Zaragoza, confirmed the deaths and said on his former Twitter account, X, that all government events in the region were canceled for the day.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also expressed his shock at the fire and deaths.

The fire occurred just weeks after devastating floods in Valencia killed more than 200 people and destroyed thousands of homes. The flood was the worst natural disaster in Spain’s recent history.
