Local teams struggle to survive and advance on day two of girls volleyball state tournaments

A half-dozen local teams got off to a lively start on the opening day of the Class 1A-5A girls volleyball state tournaments Thursday at the Denver Coliseum.

The action continued unabated on Friday, leading up to the final day of the double-elimination tournaments on Saturday.

Windsor and University have qualified for the state meet in 4A, Briggsdale is in action in 1A, while three local teams are vying for the 3A title, featuring top seeds Eaton and Platte Valley as well as defending state champion Resurrection Christian.

As for Thursday’s early-round matchups, Windsor, ranked ninth in 4A, got off to a strong start by defeating No. 8 Lutheran 3-1 (25-20, 12-25, 25-20, 25-22). first round. The Wizards advanced to their second-round matchup with Thompson Valley on Thursday afternoon by a 3-1 score (25-27, 25-21, 27-25, 25-14).

Windsor (19-9) fell to the lower bracket but still has a chance to get back to the finals by advancing to a second-round lower bracket match against No. 11 Palmer Ridge (15-12), scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m.

The Wizards kept the season alive with a 3-0 victory over No. 7 seed Timnath (25-15, 15-18, 25-18) in their first-round lower bracket match earlier Friday.

The university, seeded 10th in the 4A state tournament, earned a decisive win over seventh-seeded Timnath 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-13) in the first round earlier Thursday. The Bulldogs had also beaten the Cubs in four sets a month earlier during the league season.

University fell inches short of a major upset in the second round late Thursday night, falling to second-seeded Lewis-Palmer in five sets (25-21, 25-14, 19-25, 21-25, 15-9).

The Bulldogs (19-8) finished the season with a 3-0 upset (25-18, 25-21, 25-12) against No. 8 Lutheran in the first round of the lower bracket on Friday morning.

Resurrection Christian, seeded seventh in 3A play, won a tough first-round match against No. 10 Strasburg 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-11) earlier Thursday.

The Cougars were unable to maintain that momentum as they lost to second-seeded Platte Valley (25-18, 25-19, 25-13) in the second round later Thursday.

Resurrection Christian dropped to the lower bracket by earning a 3-1 victory (25-17, 22-25, 25-7, 25-18) against No. 9 Peak to Peak on Friday. The Cougars punch their tickets to a lower-seeded second-round game against No. 6 Lamar or No. 5 Gunnison on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Platte Valley earned a first-round bye before sweeping Resurrection Christian in the second round on Thursday. The Broncos (23-3) are scheduled for a third-round game against No. 3 The Village (23-3) on Friday at 3:30 p.m., after the Tribune’s print deadline. A win in the third round will affect Plate Valley’s ticket to the semi-finals on Saturday at 14.00.

Eaton, the top seed in 3A, also received a first-round bye on Thursday and swept 8 Sterling (25-14, 27-25, 25-16) later in the day. The Reds (24-2) defeated No. 4 seed Alamosa (22-4) in the third round on Friday, but the game was not completed by Tribune print deadline.

Despite a strong start Thursday, Briggsdale fell 3-1 (17-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-11) to sixth-seeded Stratton in the first round of the 1A state tournament. The 11th-seeded Falcons (16-8) play in the lower bracket game against No. 4 seed Otis in the first round on Saturday in the early morning hours.

Briggsdale (17-9) showed great determination to keep its season alive by beating the Bulldogs (19-7), 25-23, 28-26, 25-14. The Falcons lost to No. 9 Sargent/No. He advanced to the second round match 1-1. 10 Cheraw is scheduled for Saturday at 17:00.
