Herrin man accused of beating woman and setting fire to apartment

HERRIN, Illinois (KFVS) – A Southern Illinois man is accused of beating a woman and setting fire to an apartment.

Doneil J. McKenzie, 46, was arrested for aggravated arson and aggravated domestic battery, among several other charges.

He was taken to Williamson County Jail.

According to the Herrin Police Department, they responded to a disturbance at an apartment in the 600 block of North 6th Street around 6:40 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14.

Officers said they found a woman next door with injuries from what appeared to be a physical fight.

According to police, the woman said McKenzie beat her and fled the apartment.

Officers went to the apartment and took McKenzie into custody. While there, they said they noticed smoke and flames coming from inside the house.

Police teams checked the apartment and found that there was no one inside. They later evacuated the surrounding apartments as a precaution.

Herrin Fire Department, Herrin Police Department Investigations and Illinois State Fire Marshal responded to the scene. They determined that the fire in the apartment was started intentionally.
