The National Hurricane Center said Friday. HE Tropical Storm Sara Heavy rainfall from the storm near the northern coast of Honduras is likely to cause “life-threatening” flash floods and landslides in parts of Central America early next week. The storm is not expected to directly affect the United States, but some of its remnants could affect Florida next week.

As of Friday morning, Sara was located approximately 30 miles south-southwest of Isla Guanaja, Honduras, with maximum sustained winds around 50 mph and higher gusts.

According to the hurricane center, the storm is moving westward and is expected to continue moving westward at a slower pace over the next few days. Sara’s center is expected to approach the northern coast of Honduras early Saturday, then approach the coast of Belize early Sunday, forecasters said Friday morning.

Sara is expected to approach Belize and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula late this weekend, where there is a risk of strong winds. The hurricane center warned that residents in these areas should monitor the latest forecast updates.

“If the center of Sara remains over water north of Honduras, some slight strengthening may be possible over the next few days,” the NHC said in an advisory Friday morning, adding: Dispersion is expected after the weekend.

Relatively small wind shear and warm water temperatures may aid the strengthening process, according to AccuWeather.

Could Sara affect the US?

According to the hurricane center, “Sara is expected to weaken rapidly after moving into the Yucatan, and what’s left of the system as it emerges into the Bay of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico is poorly suited for redevelopment.”

But AccuWeather meteorologists say if the storm remains strong as it passes over Central America and southeastern Mexico, Sara or its remnants could move into the Gulf of Mexico, where it could re-strengthen and threaten Florida with flooding rain, storm surge and damaging winds. to say.

Central America will struggle with rain

Rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 inches and isolated storm totals around 30 inches are expected across northern Honduras early next week, the NHC said Friday.

“These rainfalls will lead to life-threatening and potentially devastating flooding and landslides over large areas,” the hurricane center said.

Across the rest of Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, eastern Guatemala, western Nicaragua and the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, Sara is expected to produce 5 to 10 inches of rain by early next week, with localized totals around 15 inches.

Storm surge could raise water levels along the nearshore by as much as 1 to 3 feet above normal tide levels in areas with onshore winds along the northern coasts of Honduras and Guatemala, the NHC said Friday.
