Josh Brolin got into a tense standoff with Barbra Streisand over her drinking

Josh Brolin had a tense falling out with his stepmother, Barbra Streisand, during her battle with alcohol addiction.

The actor, whose father James Brolin married the singer/actress in 1998, struggled with substance abuse issues for years but has been sober since 2013 and has now revealed that he had a very difficult conversation with Barbra when she visited her home and asked for a glass of wine. wine.

“My father, James Brolin, married Barbra in 1998, when I was 30, and we were all going to live happily ever after. That was the ticket,” Josh wrote in an essay for the Wall Street Journal based on his memoir, ‘From the Bottom of the Truck.’

“One day during our happily ever after, I walked into their house and said, ‘I’ll have a glass of wine.’ He looked at me and nodded, and I repeated myself. ‘I’ll have a glass of wine,’ I said. A glass of red wine, please.’

“He took a slow breath and hit me: ‘Aren’t you an alcoholic?’ It was a pretty brave thing to say… He had a habit of always washing his tongue out with a bull*** cleaner before speaking to me.”

He added of the conversation: “(I said) ‘I’m an alcoholic but I like red wine’. (He said) ‘You shouldn’t drink’.”

Josh’s mother, Jane, divorced James in the mid-1980s but died in a car crash in 1995, and the ‘No Country for Old Men’ star admits his stepmother tried to help him as much as she could.

She added: “Who wants to be a stepmother…? No one. It connotes bad intentions: serious compensation for cosmetic insecurities; misery loves company; the me me me syndrome. Barbra wasn’t like that. She wanted a family of the kind…

“Barbra never saw me as that kind of guy. She never knew what led me to jail or a fight, or figured out why I woke up on the sidewalk with my T-shirt wrapped around my otherwise bare waist. She just wanted to see, give me some good old-fashioned mothering, I had to get used to it.”

Following his arrest for public drunkenness in 2013 and the end of his marriage to Diane Lane, Josh checked into rehab and admitted he realized he was on a “destructive path” and needed to change his life.

“That was another turning point. It made me think about a lot of things. My mother was dying when I was in my 20s,” he told the Guardian newspaper.

“I couldn’t get past the impact it had on me; I was always a total mama’s boy. But I realized I was on a destructive path. I knew I had to change and mature. It was like I had stepped away. When I came back, I saw the hamster wheel.”
