Jaguars-Lions: 5 Players to Watch

The Jacksonville Jaguars are major underdogs this week.

The Jaguars have the worst record in the NFL at 2-8 and will now be tasked with going against them. The best team in the NFC is the Detroit Lions.

But for the Jaguars to pull off an upset, several of their best players will need to step up to the big stage. So which players will the game come to? We break it down below.

Travis Etienne

The Jaguars’ offense has failed to get the running game going in any way over the past few weeks. That needs to change this week if they want to prevent the game from getting out of hand and forcing Mac Jones into a bigger role. Considering Tank Bigsby is out with an ankle injury, Travis Etienne could be the man tasked with manning the backfield.

DaVon Hamilton

The Jaguars saw their interior defensive line have its most devastating game of the season last week. To have a chance against the elite Lions offense, they will need to perform again. The leader of this performance will probably be DaVon Hamilton, who has been playing his best football of the season in recent weeks. Hamilton can be a gritty and effective passer against the run, and this would be a great chance for him to move forward.

Mac Jones

Simply put, the Jaguars need more than backup quarterback Mac Jones this week. Jones was in a difficult situation last week due to injuries to the left defender and winger, but this week the opponent’s difficulty does not ease at all. Jones expressed high confidence in his ability to bounce back this week. If the Jaguars are going to have a chance, they’re going to need him to do it.

Jarrian Jones

The Jaguars will need to have everyone on the field in the second round this week. The Lions spread the ball around on offense and make sure a lot of different players are involved. Perhaps the most important of these players is Amon-Ra St., who deals most of his damage outside of the slot. Brown. How well Jarrian Jones slows down one of the NFL’s most productive linebackers will determine the success of the defense.

Brian Thomas Jr.

The Jaguars haven’t been able to get their best quarterback into the game for a variety of reasons over the last two weeks. But four catches and 36 yards in two games is unacceptable, and the Jaguars know they have to change that if they want to have a chance on offense. The Lions will likely show a little more interest in Thomas, so how the Jaguars respond will mean a lot.

“Yeah, so we’ve got to do something. I think the biggest thing is to keep giving him those opportunities. Sometimes things happen where you think he’s going to get the ball and things happen to him. Press Taylor, the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator, said, ‘take the play away.’

“Pressure or not, for whatever reason, the ball wasn’t thrown. The other day we were calling screens but sometimes it wasn’t even thrown to him. There are opportunities and we’ve got to keep going. We’ve got to keep giving him opportunities to find them because as we say every week he’s dynamic for us and that’s why He needs opportunities to get football.”
