As Usagi weakens, Philippines prepares for typhoon Man-yi

“NCR is in the greatest danger here,” Interior Minister Juanito Victor Remulla said at the briefing. “NCR is very vulnerable to re-flooding.”

Man-yi gained strength overnight in the Western Pacific, with sustained winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 185 kilometers per hour. It is expected to land in the eastern province of Catanduanes between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Another typhoon, UsagiIt weakened sharply on Friday after attacking northern towns in the Philippines, blowing up homes in its path, before moving towards Taiwan.

No casualties have yet been reported from Usagi, but thousands of families living in vulnerable communities have fled before its arrival.

Rueli Rapsing, head of Cagayan disaster relief office, said town officials were still checking the extent of damage from the storm.

“There were more houses partially or completely blown away after Marce (Typhoon Yinxing). We are currently moving to assess the damage,” Rapsing said in a statement on Friday. he said.

Mandatory evacuations of vulnerable residents in coastal towns along Typhoon Man-yi’s path will begin on Friday, the interior ministry said.

In October, Tropical Storm Trami and Typhoon Kong-rey caused severe flooding and triggered landslides, according to government data; 162 people died, 22 are still missing.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said four storms occurred simultaneously in the western Pacific Ocean this month for the first time since records began in 1951.

An average of around 20 tropical storms occur in the Philippines every year, causing heavy rains, strong winds and deadly landslides.

In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest typhoons ever recorded, hit the city of Tacloban, killing more than 6,300 people.

As storms grow stronger, drawing energy from warmer waters, rising sea levels make low-lying coastlines more vulnerable.
