Farmers warn: Unless you reach inheritance tax deal you risk tractors ‘blocking every road in Britain’

The response sparked anger from rural campaigners who called on ministers to “read the public mood”.

Responding to Mr Zeichner’s comments, Mo Metcalf-Fisher, director of external affairs at the Rural Alliance, said: “Farmers work hard every day, in all weather conditions, to feed us. It’s incredibly important that they decide to leave the farm and go to London to express their resentment and anger over this terrible family farm tax.

“The Treasury should show some compassion and read the public mood against them on this policy. “Rural Labor MPs need to stand up on behalf of their constituents and tell Rachel Reeves how toxic this policy has become.”

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, also advised Labor not to “underestimate the anger of farmers”, pointing to major protests over fuel prices in 2000 that caused a “really big wobble” for Sir Tony Blair.

Farmers and other angry activists have blockaded two-thirds of Britain’s oil refineries and some fuel depots, leaving more than 4,000 petrol stations empty.

Farmers’ online forums have already attracted calls for militant tactics, including suggestions from an anonymous farm farmer that fertilizer chemicals could be sprayed on the lawns of Parliament Square to send an obscene message to the government.
