Priest Pa. Pleaded guilty to stealing $155,000 from his church

A priest pleaded guilty earlier this week to stealing $155,000 from a church in Washington County.

According to a press release George Athanasiou, 37, of the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, stole hundreds of donation checks from All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Canonsburg and signed and delivered them for his personal use.

Athanasiou used the money to finance his gambling addiction. KDKA reported.

Officials said video evidence showed Athanasiou endorsed the checks and deposited them into the ATM. When questioned by police, he admitted stealing the checks.

“Stealing money is theft, plain and simple, whether committed by a petty criminal or a trusted faith leader, which was the case here; this priest betrayed his parishioners by stealing donations that would otherwise benefit the church,” said Attorney General Henry. in the press release. “This felony plea holds the defendant accountable for his conduct while also providing a significant restitution payment to the church community.”

Athanasiou paid $155,000 in damages. He will be sentenced on February 18. He faces up to 7 years in prison.
