ATLANTIC BEACH, NC (WRAL) – More than 200 dead stingrays were found in Atlantic Beach on Thursday.

According to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, fishermen received notice from a net fishing operation Thursday morning that they would be fishing on the beach.

NCDEQ said notifications are required.

When the Marine Fisheries Division and Marine Patrol officer arrived to observe the operation, they found more than 200 dead stingrays caught during the fishing operation washed ashore.

NCDEQ said the fisherman released the stingrays, but some still washed up on shore as he tried to rescue the stingrays from the waves and return them to the water.
