More than 220,000 portable adult bed rails were recalled Thursday after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an emergency alert following reports of one death and serious injuries.

Portable adult bed rails have been developed in the last three years. was recalled eight more times It reported that 17 people died due to entrapment and suffered serious injuries to the head, neck or chest. A total of nine recalls and two additional product warnings affected more than 3 million products.

The current recall is for bed rails manufactured by Medical King in Brooklyn, New York, following reports of entrapment and suffocation hazards. Affected model numbers are 7007, 7057 and 7037. One death was reported in connection with this recall, bringing the total to 18.

The CPSC said data shows that 92% of deaths from portable bed rails are caused by entrapment, usually from the head or neck.

“Those who care for the elderly or those with mobility impairments or mental challenges need not worry that a critical piece of support equipment they rely on could lead to serious injury or death,” said CPSC Chairman Alex Hoehn-Saric. “During National Home Care Month, we want to encourage all caregivers, whether in private homes or institutional settings, to ensure that the adult portable bed rails they use are installed correctly, used correctly, and have not previously been recalled.”

In January 2023, the CPSC issued new mandatory safety standards for portable adult bed rails, and they are all available for sale. Made in the USA must comply with current performance and testing requirements.

CPSC’s website also includes an “Adult Bed Rails Safety Training Center” with a variety of safety tips and information for families and caregivers.

Safety tips include:
