Small-scale wildlife plans transforming neglected areas of Derby

The project has resulted in the creation of three new community gardens and allotments at Derby at Society Place, Normanton High Street and Normanton Park, and three ‘green corridor spaces’ at Hadhari, Laverstoke Court Asylum Seeker Hostel and Derby West Indian Community Association allotments.

Other groups were supported to develop their own nature projects.

Joginder Bains of the Indian Labor Association has worked with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to transform Church Street Park in Normanton into a space where local people can enjoy and change current practices of bird feeding.

He said: “It’s about education. People were feeding the birds all kinds of food. Stale bread, pizza, rice, noodles, everything. It attracted the mice.

“If we turn this area around it will help us combat climate change and encourage wildlife.”
