Downtown Daily Bread opens year-round night shelter

A night shelter has opened in Harrisburg and will remain open year-round.

Daily Bread in the City Center South Street announced this week that the night shelter is open and currently operates year-round from 7pm to 7am.

Historically, Downtown Daily Bread’s night shelter operated only during the winter months. But the nonprofit recently $500,000 from the city of Harrisburg operating the night shelter year-round. The shelter will have an accommodation capacity of up to 50 people. The nonprofit will also provide support services and meals. The year-round shelter will operate until December 2026.

Funding comes from the American Rescue Plan.

“We are deeply grateful to the City of Harrisburg for recognizing the need and stepping up to make this possible,” Corrie Lingenfelter, general manager of Downtown Daily Bread, said in a news release. “It has been a long-held dream to expand our shelter to provide year-round service. This is more than just a place to sleep; it’s about dignity, safety and community support every day of the year.

In addition to overnight shelter, Downtown Daily Bread will continue to provide daily shelter services, hot meals, access to showers, postal services and essential needs to meet the basic needs of those facing housing instability.

Christian Churches United also received $500,000 to operate a night shelter for the year. United Christian Churches will partner with Grace United Methodist Church Operating a night shelter on State Street in the city for up to 25 women and non-binary individuals with the potential to offer emergency shelter to an additional five people on a short-term emergency basis.
