‘It hurts so much’: Mother recalls last words of daughter trapped under container after crash in Penang

While netizens paid tribute to the late Ms Lee, others called for more action to be taken against the at-fault driver.

“This is a terrible mother’s nightmare. We extend our condolences to his family, may he rest in peace. I hope the driver is held responsible,” said X user @ladymissazira.

Meanwhile, X user @parvin_84 expressed his condolences and hoped the victim’s mother was doing well.

“Just reading this is heartbreaking. “I can’t imagine someone you love saying that when you are completely helpless,” he wrote, referring to Ms. Lee’s last phone call.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Anthony Loke also touched upon the accident and stated that the operating license of the trailer company involved in the accident may be suspended if it is determined that it does not comply with safety regulations.

“The Land Public Transport Agency, together with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), will carry out an inspection on the company. If they are found to fail or not comply with safety measures, their licenses will be suspended,” he said after an event organized by the Malaysian Maritime Institute on November 14, according to local news agency Bernama.

“This is a tragic and saddening incident that should never have happened and action must be taken.”

Mr. Loke added that his ministry was committed to a thorough investigation to determine whether the cause of the accident was related to a technical problem, a defective container or negligence in ensuring safety. He also ordered the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute to conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation.

According to local media reports, the 51-year-old driver was detained for four days to assist with investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving.

If convicted, the driver could face up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to RM50,000 (US$11,248) and a driver’s license ban for 10 to 20 years.

Mr Loke, who reported in local media that the man appeared at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate Court and flashed a peace sign to the media, also expressed his disappointment at the driver’s insensitive behaviour. Mr Loke said the move showed a lack of sympathy for the victim’s family, who were still grieving.

Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Chief Deputy Commissioner Helmi Aris confirmed that urine screening tests conducted on the driver on November 13 came back negative for alcohol.
