Action News viewer and owner of Fence USA steps up to repair fences vandalized with racist graffiti in Camden County, New Jersey

LAWNSIDE, N.J. (WPVI) — A local business owner is taking action to help right a racist wrong in Camden County, New Jersey.

Last weekend, a Lawnside resident woke up to realize someone had done just that. He spray-painted a terrible insult on his fence.

Fence USA’s Nick Amechi saw the story about this horrific incident posted on Action News and reached out in hopes of helping.

“We learned the story this weekend via 6abc. Our mission as a company at Fence USA is to help people,” Amechi said.

Although much of the graffiti has been erased or painted over, remnants of what happened still remain.

The fence belongs to Dawn Hines, who has lived in a black community for 20 years.

Discovered racist, disgusting graffiti over the weekend.

Hines immediately called the police, and his neighbors began coming out in groups to oppose the hate.

“Anyone who knows me knows I’m always smiling. They call me ‘happy’ but I haven’t been smiling lately. Is this here? I’m definitely smiling on the inside!” said Hines.

Lawnside was the first independent, self-governing African American municipality north of the Mason-Dixon Line. The roots of society are deep and this will not be tolerated.

And Amechi decided to do something about it by replacing the fence.

“Erase the hate, bring in the love. This incident here exemplifies all of that,” Hines said.

Police are continuing to investigate but so far no one has been charged.

Meanwhile, the Camden County Eastern NAACP is hosting a meeting about the incident at Lawnside Borough Hall this weekend.
