New AI tool teaches care staff to better connect with seniors

“Do you have any chronic illnesses?” This may seem like a simple question during health screenings, but for seniors, answers can range from detailed blood pressure records to a bland “I’m fine.”

Communicating with the elderly is not always an easy task. Many older people are more comfortable speaking in dialects or their native language. This means it may be difficult for less experienced care workers or those who speak other languages to provide detailed health information.

Due to Singapore’s rapidly aging population, obtaining such medical information, as well as accurate screening answers, is crucial to help care professionals provide the best possible support.

Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH), the organization that runs health assessment courses for workers at Active Aging Centers (AACs) and nursing homes, is trialling an artificial intelligence (AI) solution to help care staff practice conversations in a virtual environment. They meet and talk to different elderly people.

These characters are based on cases KWSH often encounters, from elderly people with memory problems to the difficulties of living alone. These real-life examples helped KWSH’s technology partner Nudgyt create a wide range of application scenarios that reflect real scanning situations through behavioral AI.

Using behavioral AI for personalized learning

KWSH’s partnership with Singapore-based technology start-up Nudgyt, Open Innovation Platform (OIP) of the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA)It helps companies facing business challenges connect with more than 13,000 innovative technology solution providers worldwide.
