The driver responsible for the double fatal accident in 2022 was sentenced to prison for manslaughter

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Judge sentenced responsible driver Wednesday Double fatal accident in 2022.

29-year-old Brennen Canumay was sentenced to 20 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and 5 years in prison for second-degree assault. Prosecutors said all sentences will be served concurrently.

In August 2022, on Oahu’s North Shore, Canumay recklessly made an illegal U-turn in his Ford Ranger while behind the wheel and sped down the Kamehameha Highway. He drove back and forth into oncoming traffic until he crashed into another vehicle, prosecutors said.

The other vehicle was driven by Michelle Hartman. Her daughter, Holly Hartman, was in the front seat and her husband, Ronald Hartman, was in the back, prosecutors said. Both Michelle and Ronald died in the accident. Holly was also injured.

They were all visiting the island from Virginia.

Prosecutors said Canumay was arguing with his girlfriend before the accident. He also admitted to drinking more than half a bottle of alcohol before driving.

“This was a horrific and tragic collision that could have been prevented,” prosecutor Steve Alm said. “The defendant’s illegal, careless and aggressive driving, his admission of alcohol consumption, and his anger on the day of the collision led to a 20-year prison sentence instead of probation,” Alm added.

Earlier this year, he pled no contest to charges of two counts of manslaughter and assault.
