Mother says her autistic child was sent home from school barefoot during rainstorm

MARYSVILLE, Wash. (KIRO) – A mother in Washington state says her daughter, who has special needs, was put on a school bus without socks or shoes.

The incident allegedly occurred last week during the first major rainstorm of the season.

Disiree Peterson said her 7-year-old daughter has autism, is non-verbal and requires special attention.

Her daughter attends Grove Elementary School in Marysville. Peterson said that on Monday of last week, she received photos from her daughter’s teacher that showed Peterson how disruptive her child was in class.

Peterson acknowledges that her daughter has very special needs. When the teacher sent the photos, Peterson said he immediately called the teacher, but his calls went unanswered.

Peterson later received an email stating that her daughter had been sent home barefoot by bus.

“When he came home he was screaming and crying because his feet hurt,” Peterson said. “I looked at her feet and they were muddy, wet and so cold they were purple.”

Peterson blames not only the teacher but also the bus driver. Peterson said the bus driver put the boy in a seat belt that held his hands in place, but left him barefoot.

“The school knows he needs one-on-one time and is in a closed classroom due to autism,” Peterson said.

The mother is also upset that the school did not contact her to pick up her child instead of putting him on the bus.

“There are three people who can be there (to pick him up) in 15 minutes. And I even email the teacher. I emailed his teacher saying, ‘I’m going to pick him up,’ but there was no response,” Peterson said.

The district said the teacher was suspended from the classroom, but Peterson claimed her daughter was still complaining about being mistreated at school.

She is afraid of what might happen to her daughter at school, and riding the bus barefoot still upsets her.

“It was the coldest, wettest day we’ve ever had,” Peterson said.

A spokesperson for the school district said the safety of all its students is a top priority, which is why they are investigating the teacher’s alleged actions. However, they said they could not comment further on the allegations.
