Construction worker dies after crash possibly involving bleachers at Villa Park High School in Orange County, California

VILLA PARK, California — On Thursday, one construction worker died and another was hospitalized after an accident in the stands at a Southern California high school gymnasium.

No students or school staff were injured.

The fatal crash occurred in a construction zone at Villa Park High School in Orange County, according to the school district.

OCFA staff and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department notified the school around 10:21 a.m. and found two adult patients.

One patient was transported to a local trauma center, according to the Orange County Fire Marshal’s Office. The second person was pronounced dead at the scene, the agency said.

None of the workers were identified.

“There is currently no danger to the Villa Park High School campus or the surrounding community,” the school district said in a statement.

Students said that the construction inside the gym was a renovation project.

“They took out all the new bleachers, redid the floor, new air conditioners, everything. I know they had new bleachers that were delivered a few weeks ago that they were working on,” said student Landon Hunt.

Hunt said he didn’t know what was happening at first because the only announcement was that the school would be put on lockdown.

“I was pretty scared. I thought it was a shooting or something because I wasn’t sure,” he said.

ABC7’s news helicopter was on the scene, a body was wheeled to the coroner’s van, and other construction workers appeared to console each other after what had happened.

Further details were not immediately known.
