Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis announced the 100-day plan; seeks community input

New Austin Police Chief releases his first 100-day plan. Chief Lisa Davis said her goal is to build officer and community safety and trust.

“Crime isn’t just a police problem; it’s everyone’s problem,” Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said.

Chief Davis encourages Austin residents to voice their concerns.

“And we start creating plans from that. Once we listen to those, we can say this is everybody’s plan, you know, it’s not just my plan,” Chief Davis said.

Chief Davis’ first 100-day plan begins with what he calls a listening campaign and moves on to measuring and evaluating the department’s strengths and weaknesses.

“I’m not planning on coming here and destroying the entire organization. This is a very good police department,” Chief Davis said.

He said he wants more people to participate.

“When you get those numbers up, it makes a huge difference in what you’re trying to accomplish as an organization,” Chief Davis said.

Austin police are currently down about 300 officers, but Chief Davis said a class of almost 55 recently graduated, about 35 are currently entering the academy, and a class in January could possibly have 80 people.

“The numbers are coming in,” Chief Davis said.

He said some previously terminated units may come back.

“I think motorcycles are something I’d like to see downtown. I think it’s a really important thing to have motorcycles have a good presence downtown and then have DUI enforcement introduced and that enforcement reinstated.” Chief Davis is where officers can see where we’re saving lives.

Chief Davis said too many lives were lost due to the murders.

“Sixty murders, that’s a lot, and any murder is too many,” Chief Davis said. “So what’s going on, where are these guns coming from, who’s committing these murders, so when you look at where these murders are happening, most of them are drug-related. We probably have somewhere between 13 and 15 percent. Most of these murders are domestic violence, so what are the interactions and we What can we do as an organization to mediate such events?”

Developing evidence-based solutions is the third phase of the plan, he said, and launching them is the final step.

“This will be a good change, and it will be a change that will make a big difference,” Chief Davis said.

A survey is available for community members to fill out.

Chief Davis said he will provide updates on the results of this 100-day plan once the solutions are launched.
