School of Mines professor charged with vehicular homicide and DUI in crash that killed Gold police officer

A Colorado School of Mines professor was indicted Thursday on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including driving under the influence. Death of the golden police officer earlier this month.

Professor Stephen Geer, 43, told police he had a beer with a colleague before getting behind the wheel during a heavy snowstorm in Golden on Nov. 6, according to an arrest affidavit.

Two Golden police officers were responding to an earlier crash on Route 58 around 4:40 p.m. The officers were inside a single car with its emergency lights on. It was snowing and the roads were slippery.

While officers were attending to the crash, Geer, driving a black Subaru, allegedly crashed into one of the vehicles stopped for the previous crash and then hit four pedestrians standing outside the cars (two police officers and two people who were in the previous crash). According to the arrest affidavit.

Officer Evan Dunn was pinned under Geer’s car and died. His colleague, Bethany Grusing, suffered a broken cheekbone and was also crushed under the car. Two other people also suffered serious bodily injuries, the affidavit said.

A Golden Police spokesman said Dunn was the department’s first officer to die in the line of duty.

Geer initially cooperated with a roadside check after officers at the scene said they smelled alcohol on his breath. He told them he drank a 16-ounce beer at Mountain Toad Brewery in Golden, and officers said his eyes were watery and he was unsteady, according to the affidavit.

But after he was given a written copy of his Miranda rights, Geer stopped cooperating and stopped talking to law enforcement.

He is charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault on Grusing and two other pedestrians in Dunn’s death. He was also charged with driving under the influence.

On Thursday, prosecutors said they had no results from a blood alcohol test.

A School of Mines spokesman on Thursday said they do not comment on personnel matters, but the school’s president issued a statement earlier this month saying the school would look for ways to offer support to the community.

“The officers, their families, their colleagues at the Golden Police Department, and everyone closely affected by this devastating incident are in our thoughts and prayers,” the statement said.
