Sheriff McFadden addresses former employees’ concerns

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden released a one-minute apology video Thursday addressing accusations from former employees.

Former employees allege McFadden created a hostile work environment at the sheriff’s office. They also say the sheriff used racist language.

“I want to apologize for that language,” McFadden said in the video. It was held to a higher standard. This is the sheriff’s office. But you have to understand that I’m human too and I’m not perfect. And I will make mistakes. Interviews and interviews will come because they have the luxury of speaking openly and freely. But legally I’m not. Because I am bound by the law and cannot speak openly and freely.”

WCCB Charlotte confirms the sheriff’s office has terminated two employees. Human Resources director Rudyne A. Pearson and Business Manager Dr. Angelia Riggsbe’s employment was terminated on November 13, 2024.

In a news release, the sheriff’s office announced several leadership changes.

Shanta Williams will serve as Interim Director of Human Resources and the agency will conduct a search for a permanent HR Director. Williams, who has been with MCSO for nearly 25 years, started in Business Management as a Financial Analyst and most recently served as an HR Consultant.

Christopher Allen has been appointed Interim Vice President. Chief Deputy Allen joined MCSO earlier this year from the Union County Sheriff’s Office and
Chief of General Staff. With more than 20 years of law enforcement experience, he brings a wealth of knowledge to this temporary role.

Shelby Jones is now MCSO’s Chief of Staff. Jones was the Sheriff’s first hire after taking office in 2018 and had served as Executive Assistant since then. deeply
Jones, who understands the sheriff’s office and his commitment to its mission, is ready to take on his new duties.

Andrey Melkonyan was promoted to Director of Business Operations. Melkonyan, who was hired in 2008, previously served as Accounting Chief.
The Sheriff has no doubts about Melkonyan’s ability to oversee MCSO’s financial processes.
