DeQuincy man accused of throwing deer carcasses off bridge

STARKS, La. (KPLC) – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has cited a DeQuincy man in connection with alleged deer hunting violations that occurred on November 6, 2024 in Calcasieu County.

Department agents say they quoted 62-year-old Ronald Owens as follows:

  • Deer tagging failure
  • Failure to verify deer harvest
  • Failure to comply with harvest card requirements
  • Gross Garbage

Agents said they received a complaint about deer carcasses being dumped from a bridge on Old River Road in Starks. When agents arrived on scene, they said they found multiple deer carcasses dumped under the bridge.

An investigation allowed agents to identify Owens as the person responsible for disposing of the carcasses. Authorities later contacted Owens and said he admitted to throwing deer and wild boar carcasses off the bridge and that he did not tag two of the three deer he threw.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says failure to tag deer, fail to verify deer harvest and fail to comply with harvest card requirements will carry fines of up to $350 for each offense. Gross littering carries a fine of up to $900, 16 hours of community service in a litter abatement program, and 30 days in jail.

The department also said Owens could face damages totaling $3,249 for the replacement value of the deer.
