DOVER, Del. – Police are investigating a car theft they say led to a chase and a serious crash early Thursday morning.

Just after 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dover Police responded to a report of an armed carjacking at the Wendy’s/Exxon at 1710 North DuPont Highway. The victim reported that as he was returning to his car, he was approached by two masked men, one with a gun. The suspects then reportedly demanded that the victim hand over his keys, to which the victim complied and left in the suspects’ 2013 Honda Accord.

Around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, officers spotted the stolen vehicle in the area of ​​North DuPont Highway and College Road. Police attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. While the suspects were traveling east on Route 42 approaching the North DuPont Expressway, they reportedly failed to stop at a red light and struck the driver’s side of a 2020 Nissan Rogue traveling north on the highway. While both drivers were trapped in their vehicles, they were removed from the vehicle by first responders.

The driver of the stolen Honda, a 19-year-old from Camden, and the driver of the Nissan, a 53-year-old from Hartly, were taken to a New Castle County hospital for injuries. The Honda’s passenger, an 18-year-old from New York City, was taken to an area hospital.

According to the police, all people are in hospital and their condition is stated to be serious.

Police also found a stolen gun in the suspects’ vehicle.

Detectives are said to be working to determine if this incident is related to an armed robbery at Wawa on Tuesday.
