Syrian state media: 2 Israeli airstrikes hit Syria’s capital and a suburb, killing 15 people

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Israel launched two air strikes on a western Damascus neighborhood and one of the capital’s suburbs, killing at least 15 people, the Syrian state news agency said.

One of the attacks targeted an office of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group. State news agency SANA, quoting an unnamed military official, reported that 16 people were injured in the airstrikes.

SANA said two buildings were hit in airstrikes in Damascus’ Mazzeh neighborhood and the Qudsaya suburb in the northwest of the capital. An Associated Press reporter at the scene in Mazzeh said a five-story building was damaged by a missile landing in the basement.

An official from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Group said that the office of one of the groups was targeted in the attack in Mazzeh and many people from the group were killed. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

SANA said Syria’s air defenses were activated against a “hostile target” south of the city of Homs. He did not give further details.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, targeting members of the Lebanese Hezbollah and officials of Iran-backed groups.
