The Armed Forces Special Powers Act has been implemented in six police stations of Manipur, including Jiribam

In Manipur’s six police station areas, including Jiribam, where the violence took place, the Center has reintroduced the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, which provides for an area to be declared “disturbed” for ease of operation of security forces.

The decision was taken in view of the persistent unstable situation in the region due to ongoing ethnic violence, the Union Home Ministry said in a notification.

The police station areas where AFSPA has been reintroduced are Sekmai and Lamsang in Imphal West district, Lamlai in Imphal East district, Jiribam in Jiribam district, Leimakhong in Kangpokpi and Moirang in Bishnupur.

The new order comes after the Manipur government on October 1 implemented AFSPA in the entire state, excluding 19 police station areas, including these six.

The police stations excluded from the Manipur government’s October 1 order to impose AFSPA were: Imphal, Lamphal, City, Singjamei, Sekmai, Lamsang, Patsoi, Wangoi, Porompat, Heingang, Lamlai, Irilbung, Leimakhong, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Nambol, Moirang, Kakching. , Jiribam.

11 suspected militants killed in violent clash Security forces were contacted on Monday after insurgents in camouflage uniforms and armed with advanced weapons opened indiscriminate fire on a police station and the adjoining CRPF camp in Manipur’s Jiribam district.

A day later, 6 civilians, including women and children, were kidnapped by armed militants in the same district.

More than 200 people have been killed and thousands left homeless in ethnic violence between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the Kuki-Zo groups in the neighboring hills since May last year.

Ethnically diverse Jiribam, largely unaffected by conflict in the Imphal Valley and adjoining hills, witnessed violence after the mutilated body of a farmer was found in a field in June this year.
