Why Are Solar Powered Smart Doorbells the Best?

  • Solar add-ons can extend battery life indefinitely.

  • Ideal for renters; There is no need for permanent wiring.

  • Solar allows placement away from power sources.

Smart home doorbells are generally great, but they are a pain to wire. That’s why I prefer to use my Ring doorbell on battery power. This means I need to charge it every few months, but thanks to the solar add-on I almost never have to plug it in.

Significantly Extends Battery Life

First of all, it is possible to operate a smart doorbell solar energy indefinitely. The doorbell will continue to work as long as the solar panel provides enough power to maintain the battery’s charge.

However, in most cases, solar add-ons for a smart doorbell will only delay the battery from completely draining. For example, in my case, our front door only gets direct sunlight in the morning and afternoon. So even though this means I only have to charge the doorbell once a year instead of every six months, I still need to charge the doorbell after all.

If your intention is to operate a smart doorbell off-grid without charging at all, this is clearly something to keep in mind. In this case, you’ll need to insert the battery carefully and use a solar charger attachment that produces enough power to prevent the battery from completely draining.

Perfect If You’re Renting

Battery power options for smart doorbells produced by Ring are already the first choice of renters rather than homeowners. This means you don’t have to spend time and money doing a new permanent wired installation in someone else’s house, and of course in most cases your landlord won’t let you do that.

If you, as a renter, have to use your doorbell’s battery mode, a solar power add-on will make your life easier. We either make charging unnecessary or increase the time between charges.

You Can Put Your Bell Away from Power

While it’s not difficult to spread a Wi-Fi signal across open ground, if you have a door or other entrance away from your home, getting power there can be a problem. With a solar add-on for your doorbell, you can place your smart doorbell anywhere within your Wi-Fi signal coverage area.

Has Disadvantages

Objectively, the most reliable and stable way to install a smart doorbell bind permanently. But overall battery and solar offer more flexibility and convenience, and so I’d recommend that over a wired setup for most people.

However, there are some downsides to consider when walking the sunny path. If you don’t have optimal placement options like me, you won’t be able to take full advantage of the solar panel. If you have the option of using a self-contained solar panel, you probably third party kityou can then adjust the panel for optimal charging and run a cable from the panel to the doorbell. In an integrated solution like the one I use, the bell itself needs to be in the right spot and this is not always possible.

Besides placing the panel in the correct position, the panel itself also needs some maintenance. You need to check that it is not covered with dust and occasionally check for corrosion or other damage. Other than that, it should be a simple and elegant solution to your doorbell power needs.
