Smart home doorbells are generally great, but they are a pain to wire. That’s why I prefer to use my Ring doorbell on battery power. This means I need to charge it every few months, but thanks to the solar add-on I almost never have to plug it in.

First of all, it is possible to operate a smart doorbell solar energy indefinitely. The doorbell will continue to work as long as the solar panel provides enough power to maintain the battery’s charge.

If you, as a renter, have to use your doorbell’s battery mode, a solar power add-on will make your life easier. We either make charging unnecessary or increase the time between charges.

Objectively, the most reliable and stable way to install a smart doorbell bind permanently. But overall battery and solar offer more flexibility and convenience, and so I’d recommend that over a wired setup for most people.

However, there are some downsides to consider when walking the sunny path. If you don’t have optimal placement options like me, you won’t be able to take full advantage of the solar panel. If you have the option of using a self-contained solar panel, you probably third party kityou can then adjust the panel for optimal charging and run a cable from the panel to the doorbell. In an integrated solution like the one I use, the bell itself needs to be in the right spot and this is not always possible.

Besides placing the panel in the correct position, the panel itself also needs some maintenance. You need to check that it is not covered with dust and occasionally check for corrosion or other damage. Other than that, it should be a simple and elegant solution to your doorbell power needs.
