Dogs left on roadside with heartbreaking note

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (WPTV) – Two dogs are looking for a new home after being dumped on a dirt road in Florida with a heartbreaking note begging for help.

Dogs named Mella and Rocky are happy and friendly; That’s how their owners described them, writing in black marker on their harnesses and abandoning them along a road in Jupiter Farms. Tucked inside the harness were the dogs’ medical records and a note begging for someone to help them.

“I’m so sorry, but I’ve run out of time and options,” the note read.

Sarah Johnson picked up the dogs overnight and delivered them to Janelle Marrone, director of the Furry Friends animal rescue, on Tuesday.

“It’s incredibly sad to know that people are ready, willing and able to abandon their dogs,” Johnson said.

Rescue efforts have exceeded capacity at the Jupiter location but make room for Marrone, Mella and Rocky.

“It’s crazy that they got thrown out like that,” he said.

Abandoning an animal is a misdemeanor in Florida, but Marrone says it’s still very common. He says due to overcrowding in shelters, people are left with nowhere to put their pets. Even at the Palm Beach County shelter, there is a two-month wait for surrenderers.

“People panic and don’t know what to do and abandon their dogs. It’s really bad,” Marrone said.

Furry Friends plans to reach the owners of Mella and Rocky, who are mentioned in the dogs’ medical records. Marrone wants to know why this happened.

Meanwhile, rescue teams are preparing the dogs for adoption.

“I hope these dogs get adopted together and quickly. They are so sweet. They were with us in such a short time, they were a real treasure,” said Johnson.
