From foster care to forever homes: Adoption of 106 children completed in San Bernardino County

ONTARIO, Calif. (KABC) — As little Taylor Morrison sat painting her face, she didn’t realize her life was about to change forever.

The little boy is adopted just one day before his third birthday.

“It’s a feeling I can’t explain,” Taylor’s mother, Yvette Morrison, said. “Love is unconditional. These little guys look at you with admiration and it’s an incredible feeling.”

Morrison is not new to the adoption process, which can often involve years of court dates and foster care.

“I couldn’t have children of my own, and I thought my purpose was to help kids in need,” Morrison said. “I was very lucky to be able to adopt my first son, who is now four years old.”

He and his wife are one of 70 families participating in the campaign. San Bernardino County 24th Annual Adoption Finalization celebration at the Ontario Convention Centre.

The event took place as follows: Department of Child and Family Services and while juvenile courts celebrate adoptive families, they also highlight the many children waiting for a loving home.

“We’re always looking for families to try it out, maybe even just as foster parents and then possibly adopt,” said Jeany Zepeda, San Bernardino County Director of Child and Family Services. “Most of the time you get the child and you prepare for adoption, you fall in love with it and you’re there.”

Janea Jones attended the event with her three sons, ages three, two and two.

“We’re all basically learning how to be a family,” Jones said. “It’s been a journey but a blessing, and I can’t wait to see what the future brings.”

Jones said he was interested in raising children based on the example his parents set.

“I grew up with my parents taking in families, helping their parents with kids and things like that,” Jones said. “That really touched me and made me want to reach out and do the same thing.”

At appointed times, families gathered in makeshift courtrooms for the judge to complete adoption paperwork.

For 106 children, this day marked the end of a long and sometimes complicated foster care journey and the beginning of a new, permanent chapter.
