Jenny Cowpe, chair of St Richard’s trustees, said the changes needed in its 40th year would put it on track for another 40 years.

“We now face the prospect of laying off highly skilled, caring and compassionate professionals,” he said.

“We are doing our best to support our colleagues.”

Mr Wilkerson said national insurance contribution increases announced in last month’s Budget would add another £200,000 to financial pressures. starting next April.

“One of the things we hope to hear before Christmas is that the increase will stabilize, as it has in the public sector,” he added.

On Wednesday Health Secretary Wes Streeting said care homes would receive extra support to ease the burden of increased National Insurance (NI) contributions.

“I’m currently reviewing our budget for next year and how we allocate resources, but I want to make sure we protect our care homes,” he told the BBC.
