Infosys Science Foundation announces 2024 award winners across six major research disciplines

Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) announced the winners of the Infosys Prize 2024 for researchers under 40 years of age. The prize for each category consists of a gold medal, a citation and a prize purse worth US$100,000 or equivalent in INR.

The awards were announced in six categories: Economics, Engineering and Computer Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Physical Sciences. The winners are ISF trustees Kris Gopalakrishnan (Chairman, Board of Trustees), Narayana Murthy, K. Dinesh, Dr. Announced by Pratima Murthy, Mohandas Pai and SD Shibulal. Other trustees of ISF include Nandan Nilekani, Srinath Batni and Salil Parekh.

The Infosys Prize in Economics 2024 was awarded to Arun Chandrasekhar, Professor of Economics at Stanford University, for his contributions to the study of social and economic networks. It used datasets and leveraged theoretical methods from machine learning and computer science to collect and map network data from multiple villages in Karnataka.

The Engineering and Computer Science award was given to University of Washington School of Computer Science and Engineering Professor Shyam Gollakota for his research and technology translation that spans multiple engineering domains in areas such as smartphone-based affordable healthcare tools for the low- and mid-range. -income countries, battery-free computing and communications, and augmentation of human auditory perception with artificial intelligence.

Mahmood Kooria won the Humanities and Social Sciences award. The lecturer in the University of Edinburgh’s School of History, Classics and Archeology was awarded for his contribution to the study of maritime Islam from a global perspective, focusing on Kerala in pre-modern and early modern times.

The Life Sciences Award was awarded to Siddhesh Kamat, Associate Professor, Department of Biology, IISER, Pune, for his discoveries related to bioactive lipids, their receptors and their metabolic and signaling pathways.

Neena Gupta, Professor, Unit of Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, has been awarded the Infosys 2024 Prize in Mathematical Sciences for her work on the Zariski Cancellation Problem.

The Physical Sciences Prize was awarded to Vedika Khemani, Associate Professor of Physics at Stanford University, who has contributed to theoretical and experimental non-equilibrium quantum matter, particularly the discovery of time crystals.

Infosys Prize winners also receive the Nobel Prize (Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo), the Fields medal (Manjul Bhargava and Akshay Venkatesh), the Dan David Award (Sanjay Subrahmanyam), the MacArthur ‘genius’ Fellowship (Sunil Amrith), the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (Ashoke Sen). ) and Marconi Award (Hari) Balakrishnan). Many award winners, including Gagandeep Kang, have been elected members of the Royal Society.
