Suspected bomber dies while trying to enter Brazil’s top court ahead of G20

On November 13, a man killed himself with a bomb outside Brazil’s Supreme Court after trying to enter the building, authorities said; This has raised security concerns ahead of the country’s hosting of global leaders from the group of 20 major economies.

The explosions took place five days before a meeting of G20 heads of state in Rio de Janeiro, followed by a state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the capital Brasilia.

The first of the two explosions occurred in a parking lot near the courthouse on Wednesday evening, and seconds later the second explosion occurred in front of the court where the man’s body was found.

Federal District Deputy Governor Celina Leao said preliminary information showed the man killed himself with an explosive after trying to enter the Supreme Court. He said he had a car whose trunk he opened when another explosion occurred nearby.

Leao said he hoped it was the fault of a “lone wolf,” but he couldn’t be sure. Police said they were unable to establish the final identity of the dead man because they risked additional explosives being thrown at the body.

The explosions occurred around the Plaza of the Three Powers, an iconic square connecting the main buildings of the three branches of the federal government in Brazil.

Riots broke out on January 8 last year when former President Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters looted buildings to protest his election defeat.

Police sent a bomb squad with an explosive disposal robot to the square in the heart of Brazil’s capital to investigate the explosions.

In the statement made by the court, it was stated that the Supreme Court judges had just finished the plenary session when the explosions occurred and were quickly evacuated safely.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva left the executive palace on Wednesday night, shortly before the explosions.
