One person died in two explosions near the Brazilian Supreme Court, evacuations accelerated

Brazil’s Supreme Court was evacuated Wednesday following two explosions near the building that killed the suspected bomber, according to Brazilian officials.

The first explosion, which occurred in a square near the congress and presidential palace, occurred at 19.30 local time. The second explosion occurred in front of the Supreme Court of Appeals while the suspect was trying to enter the building. CNN reported.

Federal District Deputy Governor Celina Leao told reporters that the bombings were being investigated as suicide bombings and that no other suspects were found. He also recommended that the nation’s Congress close Thursday with great caution. According to United Press International.

All of the country’s Supreme Court justices were evacuated Wednesday night and Three Powers Plaza, home to all three branches of Brazil’s government, was closed. While the investigation into the attack continues, the cause of the explosions is not yet known.

The bombings took place five days before Brazil hosts the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. The attack sparked security concerns ahead of the summit. Chinese leader Xi Jinping is also expected to visit Brazil on November 20.
