Hit-and-run teenager hospitalized with ‘traumatic brain injury’

Monday around 6:30pm.

“He was going to the gym across the street. As far as I know, as he was crossing the road when the light turned green, a truck hit him and he kept driving, he didn’t stop,” Cristina Melluzzi said.

He said he was unaware that his eldest child, 18-year-old Luca Melluzzi-Silk, was injured. Her husband had to break the news to her.

“He said there was no need to panic, but Luca had an accident. I said what do you mean he had an accident? He said someone hit him,” he said.
  
An incident report was filed with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Melluzzi-Silk was crossing 441 on her way to the gym when she was hit by a truck. Allegedly the driver did not stop. Currently St. In the intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. His mother said his body had doubled in size due to swelling.

“He has a traumatic brain injury; he has multiple bleeds in his brain, his skull is fractured, so right now we have to wait,” he said.

Melluzzi said the community at her children’s schools in the Black Diamond subdivision is outstanding. She said people brought food and gave moral support to help her take care of her other two children.
      
Caroline Kelly is looking for change at the intersection where the hit-and-run occurred.
      
“People are dying, people are getting hurt, and these are things that could be prevented if people just did what they had to do,” Kelly said.

Melluzzi said he is grateful his son is alive. But he wants to thank the people who stopped to help Melluzzi-Silk.
      
“We are so incredibly grateful to them for saving Luca, calling 911, and helping our son, and we owe them everything, and we would love to know who these people were,” he said.

A GoFundMe page was established. So far the page has raised over $6,000 in donations in 24 hours. Anything beyond Melluzzi-Silk’s medical bills goes directly to St. He was told he was going to St. Mary’s Hospital.
