Former Michigan QB JJ McCarthy undergoes second knee surgery as Minnesota Viking

Former Michigan football star and national champion JJ McCarthy had a rough start to his rookie season. The player, who was selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, suffered a meniscus injury in a preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings earlier in the year and was sidelined for the entire season. McCarthy was poised to take over the starting job at some point during the 2024 season, but Sam Darnold instead helped Minnesota get off to a 7-2 start.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that McCarthy had just undergone his second surgery on his knee after swelling occurred as McCarthy began to rehabilitate the injury. As part of the procedure, the older Wolverine was given a biological injection.

But head coach Kevin O’Connell didn’t seem concerned that this would hinder McCarthy’s time slot when speaking to the media. The Vikings wanted to make sure there was no cause for concern, but McCarthy was reported to be in good shape upon his return to the field.

With the Vikings up 7-2, Darnold made some terrible mistakes during that span. He threw three interceptions last game against the Jaguars and the Minnesota offense failed to score a touchdown. There’s a reason the Vikings drafted McCarthy, and the hope is that he’ll be ready to take over the starting job at 25.
